I got tired of watching the riding at Hallett so my wife Kay, son Adam and I went to the track to ride our sportbikes. In between sessions I did a bit of photography, working on my pan-blur-flash techniques.

Boy you can't have much more fun than riding sportbikes at a racetrack. This was my first time back at the track after my crash last fall. I was overly cautious but by the end of the day I was having a great time. My wife brought her new CBR-600RR to the track for the first time and all three of us had fun riding. Of course my son Adam is way faster than we are, but then again he is faster than most people at the track.
Since I was busy riding I only had time to photograph at Turn 11 in between our sessions. Here you can get very close to the riders and all that is needed is a 200mm lens to get very tightly cropped pictures. I wanted to practice my pan-blur techniques since this takes a LOT of practice to perfect. I wanted to use my SB-800 flash to fill in the shadows as the riders flew past, so I only had one shot per rider. The flash really helps fill in the shadows during this bright sunlit day. I normally shoot full manual and earlier in the session this is what I did (and I like those pictures the best) but since I was busy riding and shooting I switched to to aperture priority just to make things easy.
The key to "pan-blurring" the background is to slow your shutter speed down and then practice your panning. My technique is to treat it like shooting a shotgun. I set my feet to the position of the final image, then rotate at the waist back to where the riders are coming from. This way my body is "wound up" when I first see them, then it unwinds as they move towards my "shoot zone". I then am in my natural well braced shooting stance when I click the shutter, still following through with the pan after the shot, just like you would with a shotgun.

The D2X coupled with Nikon's Vibration Reduction lenses puts out some amazing image files. These were all shot JPEG, but the image quality is still so outstanding that when you zoom in on the image above (2006-0415-0109) you can see the nameplate on the frame of the motorcycle, clearly see the year of manufacture, and almost read the VIN number. All while the bike is passing by at 40 mph.

I am always amazed at the people who ride motorcycles. It is a fast-growing pastime for many people. Be sure and take a close look at the picture above and see if you can pick out something unusual. Look closely and you will see that this rider is handicapped. I heard that he had a birth defect that left him without functioning hands, but that doesn't stop him from riding - fast - at the track. He has special leathers and gloves and gets around the track plenty fast.

You don't need a "crotch rocket" to come out to the track. This guy brought his BMW, taped up the lights, and had a great time. His wife was also on a BMW 650 and had plenty of fun. You see everything from dirt bikes with slicks to Goldwings at the track.

Female riders are the fastest growing segment of the motorcycling population. My wife Kay came out to the track to have some fun and gain confidence on the street. It is MUCH safer to ride fast on the track than on the street. Hallett encourages women to come to the track, and in this case dedicated two instructors just to help the women when they rode. Most of the women rode in the novice session so they were not intimidated with adrenaline-crazed guys blasting past them at race speed. There were 10 women at the track this day.
